The White Carpathian House of Nature is a modern visitor centre for the White Carpathians (Bílé Karpaty) Protected Landscape Area and adjacent Morava River valley in the town of Veselí nad Moravou, SE Czech Republic.

Welcome at the gate to the White Carpathians, a region of orchid meadows, orchards, flowery groves and ancient beech forests, as well as tufa fens and mineral springs. A region where folk traditions and old customs still live on, folk songs resonate in peoples’ hearts, and where local people dress up in colourful costumes on festive occasions. A landscape that has been co-created by man and nature for thousands of years.

Bílé Karpaty

The White Carpathian House of Nature was constructed in the years 2021–2023 thanks to financial support from the European Fund for Regional Development under the Operational Programme Environment and support from the South Moravian Region and the Municipality of Veselí nad Moravou. The White Carpathian House of Nature is operated by ZO ČSOP Bílé Karpaty.

Guide and mascot of the White Carpathian House of Nature is the Aesculapian snake.

Užovka stromová-ilustrace Jan DungelDon‘t be afraid of me, I‘m not poisonous. I am an Aesculapian snake and will be your exhibition guide in this House of Nature.

In the White Carpathians, I live only in the northern and central parts. Elsewhere in Czechia you can find me also rarely in the Podyjí and Poohří areas. Several millennia ago, I inhabited a much larger area further north, up to the Baltic Sea. Later it got colder, so I retreated to the south.

I feed mainly on mice and voles. But sometimes I also prey on dormice or baby birds by climbing over beams into attics or over trunks into trees.

Come in and have a look at the exhibition, where we will wander through forests, meadows, pastures, and also the underground. I reveal there more about myself, for example where I like to live and why people used to call me ‘house snake’.
